www.fastflies.co.uk is located very close to the beautiful River Tweed.
Winter is a prime time for grayling fishing and a great way to extend the fishing season. The River Tweed, located in the Scottish borders, runs through some of Scottland’s most beautiful countryside, providing a picturesque backdrop for a great day’s fishing.
The general season is from June 16th to February 28th, for specific beat access and rules including catch-and-release policies check with local associations like the Peeblesshire Trout Fishing Association or the Gala Angling Association
Information on where to buy permits can be found on the bottom of our page.
The upper Tweed around Peebles & Galashiels, is particularly good for grayling.
The grayling, often called the "Lady of the Stream," is renowned for its large, sail-like dorsal fin and beautiful appearance, making it a rewarding catch.
Essential Techniques & Flies:
Nymphing (Primary Method):
Use techniques like Czech nymphing or Euro-nymphing for getting flies deep quickly.
Weighted, beaded head & tungsten flies are used to help flies sink quickly to the desired depth, especially in fast or deep water.
Emphasizing that most of a grayling's diet is near the bottom.
We recommend patterns such as Anglian water hares ear shrimp, Hares Ear Nymphs, Tungsten Pheasant Tail, and Hot Spot Pink Jigs which have all be tried and tested.

Duo/Trio Method:
To cover different water layers, use a buoyant dry fly and suspend nymphs below it, known as the
“Dry dropper" technique. This method allows you to fish both the surface and subsurface simultaneously, using the dry fly as both an attractor and an indicator.
Dry Fly (Opportunistic):
Grayling can be caught on dry flies during midge hatches in mild winter spells, adding another exciting dimension.
Tackle Recommendations:
We Suggest a lightweight rod (2 or 3wt, 10-11ft is ideal for nymphing) and fine tippet to manage their soft mouths and the clear water conditions.
Hope you enjoy some excellent winter grayling fishing.
