This fly is probably one of the oldest traditional wet flies. It's one of those flies that can represent many things and the reason for its popularity.

To fish a Mallard and Claret fly, typically considered a wet fly, cast it downstream and across the current, letting it swing naturally through the water column while retrieving it slowly with a "figure-of-eight" line manipulation, mimicking the movement of aquatic insects; this fly is best fished sub-surface, and can be used on a single hook or as part of a multi-fly setup depending on the situation.
